Artist In Residence
The SouthWorks Artist in Residence program welcomes artists to explore the past, present, and future of our historic campus through their creative process. Each year-long residency invites a new artist to utilize site history, the physical spaces, or the campus transformation as inspiration for site-specific works. The AIR program brings an artistic lens to the stewardship of this space, illuminating its cultural, environmental, and architectural significance with new perspectives.
Harry Littell
Harry Littell is a photographer based in Ithaca, NY. He has taught photography at Tompkins Cortland Community College since 2003. His recent photo books include Parts and Service, Avenue Collection, and Summit. Littell is a member of the State of the Art Gallery, in Ithaca.
During his 2025-26 Artist in Residency, Littell explored every nook and cranny of SouthWorks, photographing the sprawling interior factory spaces. This exploration led him to seek out and interview those who built their livelihoods on the site. The culmination of that exploration and curiosity has led to Factory Stories, a collection of first-hand experiences of former employees, and those with deep connections to the Emerson Power Transmission/Morse Chain manufacturing facility, accompanied by his captivating photography.
